A gummed pad rather than a bound book, because some writing is meant to be sent. 100 sheets of the same 100 gsm cream laid used in the Folio notebooks, gummed along the head with a flexible hide glue so a sheet tears off cleanly in one pull without taking the one beneath it.
Feint-ruled at 7 mm with a single margin rule 30 mm from the left edge. The backing is 1.5 mm grey board, stiff enough to write on in the hand without a desk, which is the main reason to buy a pad at all.
The gumming is the part that is usually wrong. Hot-melt is cheaper and tears badly — it either releases two sheets or none. Hide glue costs more and releases exactly one, which is why we still use it. Unused pads should be kept flat; a pad stored on its edge will eventually part from the gum.
