What to put in the message

You will get a faster and better answer if the first message contains the following. None of it is mandatory.

  • Your order number, if the question is about an order. It begins with a hash and appears on the confirmation email.
  • For a nib question: the pen, the nib grade, the ink and the paper. All four matter, and three of them are usually the problem.
  • For a writing fault: a photograph of the line, lit from the side. A photograph of the nib is less useful than a photograph of what it did.
  • For a damaged delivery: a photograph of the outer carton before it is thrown away.
Please contact us before contacting your bank. Almost every disputed charge we have seen would have been a refund if we had been asked.Payment & security

Before you write to us about a pen

Four things account for most of the messages we get, and all four are quicker to try than to ask about.

  1. Hard starting after a few days. Almost always evaporation in the feed. Dip the nib in water, wipe it, and write. If that fixes it, the pen needs to be capped more firmly.
  2. Skipping on down-strokes only. Usually tine alignment. Look at the nib end-on under a loupe; one tine will be sitting proud of the other.
  3. Feathering. The paper, not the pen. Try the same pen on the 100 gsm laid before concluding anything.
  4. Ink flow dying mid-page. A blocked breather hole, or a converter drawn tight against the feed. Unscrew the converter a quarter turn.

If none of that helps, write to us. We would rather see it than guess.

If something has gone wrong with a charge

Please contact us before contacting your bank. A dispute raised with the card issuer takes weeks to resolve and removes our ability to simply refund you, which in almost every case is what we would have done in a single email.

Our descriptor on your statement reads as the shop name. If you see a charge you do not recognise, send us the date and the last four digits of the amount and we will identify it the same day.
