A tray rather than a stand, for the pens in rotation. 300 by 95 by 22 mm, routed from solid walnut with four parallel channels each 15 mm wide, lined in charcoal wool felt. A thumb relief is cut into both ends of every channel so a pen can be picked up without scraping fingernails along the wood.

Four is the right number. Most people who use fountain pens seriously have three or four inked at once and the rest in a drawer, and a tray that holds eight encourages a habit that ends in dried feeds.

The channels are cut 15 mm wide and 12 mm deep, which holds a slim Margin and an oversize Registry equally well — a pen deeper than half its diameter will not roll out. Finished in hard-wax oil with four cork feet. The grain runs the length of the tray, so the channels cut across it and show a clean figure on the walls.
