A 25 mm face in solid brass, rotary-engraved to about 1.2 mm depth with a single initial in an engrossing capital, mounted on a turned walnut handle with a brass ferrule. Depth is the thing that separates a seal that reads from one that does not — a shallow engraving gives a flat impression that disappears under raking light, and 1.2 mm gives shadow.
The face is engraved in reverse, obviously, and relieved around the letter so wax does not build in the field. The edge is left as a plain 1.5 mm border rather than a decorative one, because a plain border lets the letter carry the impression.
Brass rather than steel because brass sheds heat faster, which means the impression releases cleanly after about four seconds rather than sticking. Chill the face on a cold surface between seals if you are doing a run. Specify the initial at checkout; each is cut to order and takes about a week.
