A single piece of kiln-dried American black walnut, 420 by 160 by 55 mm, milled on a three-axis machine and finished by hand. It holds seven pens in individual slots angled at 12 degrees nib-up, two 50 mm wells sized to our faceted ink bottles, a 150 mm trough for correspondence cards, and a shallow channel at the back for a letter opener or a ruler.
The pen slots are the part worth explaining. They are cut to 14.5 mm, which takes everything in this catalogue including the oversize Registry barrels, and lined with a 1 mm wool felt rather than left bare — bare wood marks a lacquered barrel within a month. The 12-degree angle keeps ink in the feed and away from the nib while the pen sits.
Finished in a hard-wax oil, not a sealed lacquer, so it can be repaired locally with a cloth instead of stripped. Four cork feet. It weighs 2.1 kg and does not move when a pen is pulled from it.
