A 180 mm opener with a 90 mm blade in hardened stainless, set into a turned walnut handle with a brass ferrule. Like the brass opener the edge is rolled rather than sharpened, at about 0.35 mm, so it parts a fold without cutting the contents.

At 70 g it is a quarter of the brass opener’s weight, and it is used differently — this is a tool you flick along a fold rather than let fall through it. People who open a lot of post tend to prefer it for exactly that reason; it is faster, if slightly less self-guiding.

The steel is through-hardened and will not take a burr from paper in any reasonable lifetime. The handle is a single piece of walnut turned between centres and finished in hard-wax oil, with the brass ferrule pressed and pinned. The mark is etched into the blade near the ferrule.
