A first fountain pen should do three things: start every time, show you what is happening, and not hurt to lose. The First Entry has a clear section so the ink path is visible from the cartridge to the feed, a stainless No. 5 medium nib tuned wet at 0.6 mm, and a moulded charcoal barrel that costs little enough that it can live in a bag.
It is 131 mm capped, 15 g filled, with a screw cap in two and a half turns. The nib is the same stainless blank we use on the Schoolroom but tuned wetter, because a new user presses harder than an experienced one and a wet nib hides that.
Two cartridges are supplied, one violet and one blue-black, so the first thing that happens is a comparison. A converter fits if you want to move to bottled ink later; the barrel has the clearance for it.
