A desk inkwell is not a storage bottle; it is a working vessel you dip into or fill from twenty times a week, and the two requirements are that it does not tip and that the ink does not evaporate between uses. This one is a 90 mm cut-glass body with a wide heavy base, holding 60 ml, with a hinged brass collar and a lid that seats on a cork gasket.

The throat is deliberately narrow at 22 mm with an internal shoulder, which does two things: it lets a No. 8 nib in but keeps the evaporating surface small, and it lets you tip the well to get at the last few millilitres without the contents coming out. A wide-mouthed well loses a third of its ink to the air over a summer.

Lead-free crystal, hand-cut in a twelve-flute pattern. The collar is spun brass and will patina. The cork gasket is replaceable and one spare is supplied; it should be changed every few years.
